Of Race Singlets

Race singlets have never been a major factor for me in deciding to join a race. Until now.

My wife and I went to ROX in Boni High Street to register for the Goldilocks and Greentennial runs that will be held on May 15 and 22 respectively. Goldilocks touted a New Balance race singlet. In my opinion, it looked and felt more like a New Balance knock-off. Greentennial had a choice of a singlet or a T-Shirt. I chose the T-Shirt. I would have registered for these races, whether the singlets were great or not.

I actually prefer a finisher's shirt than a race singlet. I seldom use the race singlets because I'm usually not comfortable in them. They would either be too itchy, thick or heavy for me. The few that I used and liked are the singlets from Globe Run for Home 2010, Milo Manila Elims 2010 and Adidas KOTR 2010.

From ROX, we walked across to the Runnr store and there I saw a couple trying on nice neon yellow Brooks singlets. I also noticed they were holding registration forms. I then learned that Brooks also had a fun run - the Brooks Run Happy, and the nice singlets were the official race singlets. I thought that the singlet was really nice - somewhere in between your typical race singlet and the ones sold retail; leaning much nearer towards retail.

I pointed it out to my wife and she promptly analyzed the situation and concluded that it was a good buy at P500 (the race fee for 3k/5K and it had a price tag of around P1,400). I don't buy singlets at P1,400 but I buy them at P600 -P800 (the Goldilocks New Balance singlet had a P795 price tag; I won't buy it at P200).

So, for the first time, we registered for a race because of the singlet. Actually, we registered for a race FOR the singlet, because we knew we won't be able to join the run because it is on the same date as Greentennial. We'll probably just let some lucky runners use our slots (not our precious singlets).

We're actually contemplating on wearing the Brooks Run Happy singlets at Greentennial, so it's like being in two races at the same time. But we'll probably see a lot of shocked faces of people who wouldn't have the heart to tell us that we're in the wrong race.

Benefits of My Running

Last week, I registered for my first half-marathon of the Condura Skyway Marathon that will be held on Feb. 6, 2011. I went to Greenbelt 3 with my children. When one of my sons saw that the race kit said "21K", he exclaimed, "You're already going to run a half-marathon?!" I said "Yes." and waited for his next question, which was the question he asked when I told him that I was planning to join a 5K race, "Do you want to die?!" But no. He asked instead, "Can I have the 'dri-fit' shirt?" I then realized that this boy has also been benefiting from my running. He has been getting my race singlets and shirts (because they don't fit me). His favorite is the Mizuno Infinity Run finisher's shirt which he always uses when he runs. He also got my Nike Free Everyday 2 and Asics GT2130 running shoes. On the way out of Greenbelt 3, he asked for the free Hershey's chocolate bar. He's not getting the Coors Light. Tha

Milestone! 1st 10K All Run, No Walk Breaks! Takbo.ph Runfest 2010

Yesterday's race at the Takbo.ph Runfest 2010 was a milestone for me. I ran my 10K race all the way from start to finish. It was my 7th 10K since I started running last Dec. '09. The previous 6 were all Galloway method run-walk-run affairs. The following are the things I thought helped me achieve this: The weather was nice and cool The course was relatively flat Water stations were excellent. They provided Powerade - my favorite. A teenager (Sid) decided to run alongside me a little after 6 km. We ran side-by-side until the finish line. I now run continuously for 45 minutes to an hour, although even slower now than when I was doing run-walk-run. I'm doing low heart rate training . I wonder what I'll be able to do next ...
